GERMAN Chancellor Olaf Scholz vowed the country would get through winter today as opposition leader Friedrich Merz accused him of “damaging German companies irreparably.”
Mr Merz did not criticise sanctions on Russia, imposed following the invasion of Ukraine, which have seen gas supplies severely disrupted, but said the government should drop plans to phase out nuclear power.
Mr Scholz retorted that the country’s energy crisis was down to a lack of planning by previous administrations led by Mr Merz’s Christian Democrats, though the current Chancellor held high ministerial office in those.
He said storage facilities for fuel used to heat homes, generate electricity and power industry are now over 86 per cent full thanks to aggressive purchases of liquefied natural gas abroad.
Critics say this gas, much of it bought from China, is largely Russian in origin anyway and sold on by China at a hefty mark-up.
Mr Scholz also praised the construction of new liquefied gas terminals and the reactivation of coal-fired power plants, which has been criticised by environmental groups.
