PEACE activists are set to put forward “a different vision” for the world when they gather in Brussels next weekend.

Campaigners from across the globe said today that they intend to hold a series of events from Friday to next Sunday in protest at Nato’s expansionist military policies and to make the case for peace, justice and sustainability.

Announcement of the plans coincides with members of the nuclear-armed Western military alliance preparing for a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. 

Global Women for Peace United against Nato and the Belgian peace movement will host a programme of activities, including hybrid meetings in the Pianofabriek venue at 35 Rue du Fort, an event at the European Parliament and a street action in Place de l’Albertine. 

CND vice-chairwoman Sophie Bolt, who will attend the Brussels events, said: “Women are at the heart of the anti-nuclear movement. We are gathering from around the world to discuss alternatives to militarism and nuclear escalation. 

“From Belarus to Lakenheath in Suffolk, we are seeing the deployment of more nuclear weapons and the modernisation of Nato bases to store the upgraded B61-12 guided nuclear bomb. These are all serious escalations fuelling a new arms race.

“We put forward a different vision — and we are taking that message directly to Nato.”
