PERU: A fire broke out deep in a gold mine in southern Peru and killed at least 27 workers during an overnight shift, Peruvian authorities reported.

The Yanaquihua mining company said that 175 workers had been safely evacuated after the accident, which happened early on Saturday.

Government officials said that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

IRAN: Iranian authorities hanged two men, Yousef Mehrad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare, on Monday for the crime of blasphemy.

This comes as executions surge across the Islamic Republic following months of unrest with at least 203 prisoners executed since the start of the year, according to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights.

The two men had been arrested in May 2020, accused of being involved in a channel on the Telegram message app called Critique of Superstition and Religion.

INDIA: A double-decker boat carrying more than 30 passengers capsized Sunday night off a beach in southern India, killing more than 22 people, officials said.

The tourist boat capsized near the estuary of Poorappuzha River in Tanur, a coastal town in Kerala state’s Malappuram district.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation but local media suggest the boat may have capsized due to overcrowding.
