MINERS and supporters will gather in Yorkshire today for an annual lecture marking the deaths of two striking miners.
David Jones, 24, and Joe Green, 55, both died on the picket line during the epic miners’ strike against pit closures of 1984-5.
Mr Jones was killed when he was hit by a missile while picketing in Nottinghamshire on March 15 1984.
His death has never been fully explained.
Mr Green died when he was run over by a lorry while picketing a Yorkshire power station on June 15 1984.
Speakers at today’s annual lecture at the National Union of Mineworkers headquarters in Barnsley include dramatist John Godber and journalist Nicholas Jones.
The event begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the miners’ memorial statue outside the headquarters at 10.45am. The lecture will be followed by a social gathering at Barnsley Labour and Trades Union Club.
