World in brief: March 16, 2023

SOUTH SUDAN: The United Nations security council has demanded an immediate end to all fighting in the country and pushed for swift action by the government to ensure that delayed elections are held peacefully and freely in December 2024.

The council resolution, approved on Wednesday in a 13-0 vote, with Russia and China abstaining, also extended the more than 17,000-strong UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan for another year.

GERMANY: Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that his government must do a better job in clamping down on “irregular migration” and deporting those who do not legally reside in the country.

However, he added that Germany would continue to provide protection for Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country.

HUNGARY: Thousands of students and other opponents of the right-wing government have marched in the capital Budapest to demand educational reforms and a change in political culture.

The protest, dubbed a “freedom march” by organisers, was called by teaching unions and student groups, which have spent months pressing the government to raise pay and improve working conditions for education workers.

The groups have also demanded the repeal of legislation limiting teachers’ right to strike.

ISRAEL: Protesters pressed ahead with demonstrations today against a contentious government plan to overhaul the judiciary.

The protests coincided with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting a compromise proposal put forward by President Isaac Herzog to defuse the crisis.

Mr Netanyahu and his allies look set to push on with their original plan despite weeks of mass protests.
