Yemen: Shi’ite rebels launch fresh attack on city of Aden

SHI’ITE Houthi rebels and soldiers loyal to Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh launched a fresh offensive yesterday against the southern city of Aden, shelling it and fighting local militias.

Government security officials said that the assault had been halted by at least two strikes by Saudi warplanes on the fifth day of an aerial bombing campaign by Riyadh.

Aden, Yemen’s economic centre, was declared the provisional capital by embattled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi last week, before he fled the country.

The officials said that the combined force of Houthis and Saleh loyalists is positioned about 20 miles east of Aden, near the southern city of Zinjibar.

The rebels have used artillery to target pro-Hadi militias known as popular committees. Battles are also under way near the airport.

The Houthis accused the Saudi-led coalition of bombing a displaced persons’ camp in their northern stronghold of Saada, killing 40 people including women and children.
