Far-right groups humiliated as London protest flops

The UBP demonstrators found themselves outnumbered by an average of three to one

Anti-fascist protesters stopped a protest in central London on Saturday organised by the far-right English Volunteer Force.

It was the first action of the United British Patriots, a lash-up of several fascist groups, but still attracted less than 100 people.

The UBP demonstrators found themselves outnumbered by an average of three to one with several hundred anti-fascist activists - particularly from the North London Anti-Fascists network - arriving at Westminster throughout the day.

Police officers were accused of being heavy-handed by activist group the Anti-Fascist Network, which reported that many people were kettled for several hours in Whitehall and 12 anti-fascists were arrested.

Anti-fascist blogger BlackandRedFlag reported a further confrontation in the evening, saying English Volunteers were chased out of a local pub by anti-fascists shouting: "Nazi scum out of our pub."

EVF and UBP members were alleged to be visibly inebriated at the event, even when placing a flag on the Cenotaph war memorial.

The day was also marked by the arrest of BNP leader Nick Griffin's bodyguard. Martin Reynolds was taken into custody by Merseyside Police for an alleged aggravated public order offence involving homophobic abuse.

The party's Facebook page has a statement under the suggestion the event was "another politically motivated arrest."

Accompanying pictures show Mr Griffin looking slightly perplexed as a member of his security staff is handcuffed and lead away by police officers.

It is understood that Mr Reynolds was released on bail on Sunday morning as the investigation continues.

Activist legal group Green and Black Cross has asked for anyone who witnessed police misbehaviour on the day to call 07946 541-511.
