“HANDS OFF May Day” is the message that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani received yesterday from the IndustriALL Global Union, based in Geneva.
The 500-million-strong union federation represents workers in mining, energy and manufacturing industries in 143 countries.
Union general secretary Jyrki Raina told President Rouhani that “our Iranian trade union partners report that your government is cracking down against workers organising May Day celebrations.”
The global union urged Tehran to “ratify and implement ILO conventions 98 and 87 on freedom to establish trade unions and remove the ban on trade union activities” in accordance with article 26 of Iran’s constitution.
Mr Raina demanded recognition of Iranian workers’ right to organise for May Day and he insisted that all harassment, threats and persecution of union actvists should end.
He also called for “the release of all prisoners who have been arrested in connection with their trade union and legitimate activities.”
