A SCOTTISH firefighter has been commemorated with the unveiling of a plaque more than 40 years after he was killed doing his job.
On October 29 1978, firefighter Alexander (Sandy) Drummond of Inveraray Fire Station lost his life fighting a blaze at the Crinan Hotel in Argyll.
The plaque was unveiled at the station where he worked on Saturday, the 44th anniversary of his death.
More than 50 firefighters have been commemorated since the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) launched its Red Plaque memorial scheme in 2017 as part of the union’s centenary.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said today: “It is vital we remember firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Every day firefighters go to work not knowing if they will come home or not.
“The tremendous bravery and sacrifice of those who lose their lives in the line of duty should always be commemorated and red plaques help make sure that that is the case.”
