Bookmaker’s favourite dependent on weather

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

The weather could still play a major part in proceedings with inspections planned all over the place, but there should be no problems at Lingfield on the Polytrack unless of course there is an unusual downfall of snow.

On a competitive card, there are some decent prizes up for grabs, but the best bet of the day comes in the finale at 4.05 in the form of Bookmaker.

John Bridger’s charge is still relatively lightly raced in his career having visited the racetrack just 13 times, with just eight on those on the all-weather.

Unlike many of his rivals here the five-year-old is running at the top of his game with a victory over six furlongs here from Encapsulated followed by a fast finishing third of 10 behind Be Royale over course and distance two weeks ago.

I think the handicapper has been fair in raising him 3lbs in the weights for that run and he has solid claims of stepping up again getting weight from Bertie Blue Boy.

The rest of the card looks tricky but you can give old boy Kings Bayonet a real chance in the 3.30 especially as he will have enough pace to run at here and he returns to arguably his optimum distance of a mile and a half.

I would have preferred to see Middle England race over a mile plus in the maiden at 1.45 but this looks a suitable opening for the Godolphin youngster.

The same comment can be aimed at Ralph Beckett’s grey gelding Inexorable Tide who ran green on his debut and seemed to need every yard of the mile he raced over here on his debut three weeks ago.

I am hoping that experience will have brought him on enough to put this to bed and take care of the likes of Sample and Ivors Involvement.

It will be interesting to see if Champagne West finds the extended two and a half miles of the Scilly Isles Novices Chase (2.25) too short at Sandown, but if he is able to stay in touch down the back straight none will be finishing to better effect up the famous Esher hill.

Grumeti (stepping up in trip) is interesting as long as the ground doesn’t ride too soft but both may have to bow to Irish Saint.

The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old has looked a thorough professional on his three outings to date and his victory over Thomas Crapper at Ascot last month was a career best effort.

I will be looking for Pain Au Chocolat to land the opening juvenile at 12.40 and Garde La Victorie will surely have too many gears for the four-year-old Bristol De Mai in the Listed hurdle at 1.15.

Finally, at Ffos Las, the return to hurdles could revive Puffin Billy in the Welsh Champion Hurdle at 2.05.
