THE Scottish TUC Congress called on Western governments yesterday to recognise the rights of the Kurdish people in Turkey and resolved to support Rojava in Syria, defend Kobane and defeat Islamic State (Isis).
“The heroic struggle made by the defence forces of Rojava including women and youth and the PKK Kurdistan Workers Party has inspired people around the world,” South Lanarkshire TUC delegate Phil McGarry told the STUC Congress.
“Reinforced by peshmerga forces of the Kurdish regional government they have defeated Isis and liberated their city Kobane.
“All they are looking for is assistance in building a new society.”
Dundee TUC delegate Mike Arnott said that it was vital for the STUC to support the struggle for Kurds’ self-determination.
“Rojava is an exciting model for social and democratic progress based on cultural, ethnic and gender equality,” he said.
“The British government must take the PKK off the list of terrorist organisations where Jack Straw placed it when he was foreign secretary and Turkey must release PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been in detention for 15 years.”
