THE STUC and Scottish CND yesterday launched a joint report calling for the scrapping of Trident and the creation of socially useful jobs in place of work dependent on the nuclear weapons system.
Trident and Jobs makes the case for a powerful Scottish Defence Diversification Agency which will enable government and trade unions to intervene and direct alternative economic developments.
STUC deputy general secretary Dave Moxham told a Scottish CND fringe meeting in Ayr: “Our report in 2007 on the economic impact of Trident blew a hole in many scare stories.
“This report shows the type of government architecture that we need if we are going to drive defence diversification forward.”
PCS vice-president John McInally said there should be no role for big business in defence diversification.
“We must look after the needs of the people living and working in these communities rather than private companies looking to come in and make a fast buck.”
