Tower Hamlets: Erlam set to stand for mayoral role

WRITER and filmmaker Andy Erlam announced yesterday he would stand for mayor of Tower Hamlets following the success of his legal fight to oust Lutfur Rahman from the post.

A High Court judge ordered Mr Rahman to step down as mayor of the London borough on Thursday after being found guilty of corrupt and illegal practices.

Four Tower Hamlets voters had launched legal action against Mr Rahman and Mr Erlam, who led the group, announced that he would stand in a new election on June 11.

Labour has selected John Biggs, its defeated candidate in last year’s Tower Hamlets mayoral election, to run for the job again.
