Power-supply workers vote on walkout

NORTHERN energy workers began balloting for strike action yesterday after bosses forced through changes to working practices and terms and conditions.

The 1,200 members of general unions GMB and Unite work for power privateer Scottish Power Energy Networks in Scotland, north-west England and north Wales.

They fix disruptions to power supplies from substations and at the roadside for domestic and business needs.

GMB north-west regional organiser Albie McGuigan said: “Members have been under attack by Scottish Power for a number of months and although we have attempted to reach an amicable compromise with the company, we have been unable to do so.

“GMB remains steadfast in defending our members’ terms and conditions. The Scottish Power workers are at the front line of maintaining supplies and are outraged that long-standing, successful working practices are threatened.”

The ballot closes on May 14.
