Historic Unesco heritage site safe as Isis ejected from town

THE historic Syrian town of Palmyra is safe following an Islamic State (Isis) assault, Damascus said yesterday.

Isis guerillas attacked Palmyra on Saturday and captured a government building, but were driven out before they could reach a 2,000 year-old Unesco world heritage site south-west of the city.

The news came as the US said that its Delta Force commandos had entered Syrian territory on Saturday and killed Abu Sayyaf, described as Isis’s “head of oil operations,” and captured his wife Umm Sayyaf for interrogation in Iraq.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah also made gains against Isis in western Syria.

The Shi’ite Islamist group said on Saturday that in the past week it had liberated a large swathe of the mountainous Qalamoun region from Isis in a joint operation with the Syrian army.
