Huge rise in trolling convictions

TROLLING convictions have increased eight-fold in the last 10 years thanks to high-profile cases which have helped highlight the problem, the Ministry of Justice revealed yesterday.

New figures show that over 1,200 people were convicted last year under Section 127 of the 2003 Communications Act.

In 2004 a mere 143 people were found guilty of what is conventionally known as “trolling.”

Online abuse came under the lens when public figures such as Labour MP Stella Creasy and feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez were targeted.

Ms Criado-Perez spoke openly about the thousands of rape and death threats she received after winning her case agains the Bank of England to keep a woman on the back of banknotes.
