MPs from four parties have supported a parliamentary petition congratulating the Greek people on rejecting austerity in Sunday’s referendum, writes Luke James.
Leeds East MP Richard Burgon tabled the early day motion in Parliament and so far it has been signed by 16 more Labour MPs, mainly on the left of the party, along with Green MP Caroline Lucas, Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams and four SNP MPs, including the party’s top trade unionist Chris Stephens.
The motion “congratulates the Greek people on taking a stand against attacks on living standards of ordinary people.”
It urges the British government and EU institutions to “respect the result of the referendum and to return immediately to meaningful negotiations with the Greek government on the terms of the bailout.”
As for the outcome of the talks, the motion says “debt cancellation and a grace period without payments are necessary” to end the Greek crisis.
Eurozone finance ministers held an emergency summit yesterday, but the MPs are calling for a full “European conference” to resolve the issue.
