Anderson offers rail warning to EU leaders

LABOUR MEP Lucy Anderson warned European leaders yesterday not to repeat Britain’s rail privatisation “mistake.”

She made the appeal to policy-makers gathered in Brussels to debate draft measures that will determine future of rail across the EU, including a proposal to further liberalise the continent’s railways by pushing national governments to privatise their networks.

Ms Anderson, Labour’s European spokeswoman on transport, rubbished claims that privatised rail had been a success in Britain.

She said: “We also want to ensure the UK is able to shift away from its current model which has resulted in prices rising, customer satisfaction falling and working conditions being undermined.”
