WORKERS at a Hovis bakery who won a struggle against zero-hours contracts are now facing the threat of redundancies, the firm said yesterday.
The bakery in Wigan, Greater Manchester, employs about 350 staff and 40 are to be made redundant.
In September 2013, the workforce staged two bouts of strike action against management attempts to introduce zero-hours staff — workers who are called in when needed and left without work or wages when management sees fit.
Bosses backed down, the plan was dropped and a third strike was called off.
Hovis has now declared 40 job cuts due to “ongoing pressure and changes in the bread market.”
Bakers’ union BFAWU regional secretary Geoff Atkinson said the news had come as a shock “to us and our members.
“We will be fighting to get the best for our members and for as many workers as possible.”
