Athletics: Elaine Thompson-Herah came within 0.05 seconds of Florence Griffith Joyner’s 33-year-old 100 metres world record as she clocked the second-fastest time ever at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, US, on Saturday.
The Jamaican blazed to victory at the Prefontaine Classic in 10.54secs, eclipsing the 10.61s she ran to defend her Olympic title in Tokyo last month.
She finished well clear of compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who clocked 10.73.
Football: Paul McGowan headed a late equaliser for Dundee to salvage a point from a 2-2 draw at home to Hibernian yesterday.
Jason Cummings gave the Dark Blues an early lead in the first half. Martin Boyle equalised for the visitors before the break. Hibs edged in front in the second half thanks to Ryan Porteous.
But McGowan came off the bench to earn the home side a share of the spoils when he struck six minutes from time.
Rugby League: Castleford coach Daryl Powell felt his side were lucky to keep their derby dominance going after hanging on to beat Wakefield 23-18 on Saturday.
The Tigers dominated the first half and led 23-6 in the 48th minute but failed to score another point. Trinity rallied and almost stole a late win after tries by Tom Johnstone and Lee Kershaw in the final 20 minutes.
But Castleford held on to extend their winning run over their neighbours to 16 games.
RACING: Colin Moore may not have had the long career in he hoped for when starting out — but he is about to ride in Newmarket’s historic Town Plate on Saturday at the age of 79 meaning he could write his own page of the race’s famous history.
It will be the 351st renewal of an event first held in 1666, and Moore is hoping to better his fourth-placed finish of 2019 on his horse, Ballyrath.
