Grumbles from Blairite Labour MPs about Ed Miliband’s leadership looked ill-judged yesterday as 75 per cent of local councillors in key seats backed him in a survey.
The poll, carried out by Anglia Ruskin University’s Richard Carr, found that almost half of councillors think the Labour leader should offer a more left-wing platform — while only 13 per cent think he should aim to win “middle England” votes.
“The good news for Miliband is that key Labour activists don’t perceive the ‘weirdness’ factor to be insurmountable,” said Dr Carr.
“The bad news is that over 60 per cent think Labour’s actual policies need adjusting one way or the other.
“Our data suggests it isn’t bacon sandwiches that may end up costing Labour, but undercooked policy. Labour’s first aim should be to address its ideological timidity, not just Miliband’s foibles.”
