Paul introduces aid-cutting ICC Bill

US REPUBLICAN Senator Rand Paul introduced a Bill on Wednesday to halt US aid to Palestinians until they abandon efforts to join the International Criminal Court.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has faced pressure to take action against Israel following its 50-day summer assault on Gaza.

Existing US law says any Palestinian case against Israel at the court — but not membership itself — would trigger an immediate aid ban.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon had confirmed late on Tuesday that Palestine will join the court on April 1.

The nascent state is likely to focus on Israeli settlement construction in occupied lands.

More than 550,000 Israelis live in settlements built since 1967 in occupied lands.

The court’s 2002 founding charter says a state commits a war crime if it transfers its civilians to territory it occupies.
