Police: Shot boy ‘failed to surrender’

CLEVELAND police claimed today that the officer who killed 12-year-old boy Tamir Rice ordered the youngster three times to put up his hands before he shot him.

But at the same time, the city authorities released a surveillance video showing that the novice officer fired within 1.5 to two seconds of pulling up in his vehicle.

The youngster’s family said they has seen the video.

“It is our belief this situation could have been avoided and Tamir should still be here with us,” the family said in a statement released by lawyers.

“The video shows one thing distinctly — the police officers reacted quickly.”

The patrol officer who shot Tamir has been identified as Timothy Loehmann, aged 26. It is unclear how far Tamir was from Mr Loehmann when the officer shot him but Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said on Wednesday that it was less than 10 feet.
