IT TOOK all of 38 minutes for the first points to be scored in round five of the Super League, as Jamie Ellis’s try gave Huddersfield the impetus to go on to defeat Castleford Tigers 22-0 on Thursday evening.
The game was a sloppy, mistake-ridden affair, and Tigers’ coach Daryl Powell summed up his side’s performance, commenting: “Our attitude and application just wasn’t there from start to finish. For it to be that bad across the whole of the game I find really difficult to take.
“It’s the worst performance since I’ve been here at Castleford.”
Friday’s matches saw Warrington Wolves end Leeds Rhinos’ unbeaten record, and pull level with them in the league table after an 18-6 victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
An outstanding individual try from pacy winger Kevin Penny, and strong performances from Ben Westwood and Chris Hill in the middle of the park, helped Warrington to the win.
That first defeat for the Rhinos means St Helens are now the only side in the league with a 100 per cent record, and their 30-20 win away at Widnes sees them stay top of the table after five rounds. Saints had to rely on an impressive second-half performance to take the two points, after being down 14-6 at half time.
In the other Friday game Wigan scraped past Hull FC by one point, with a Matty Smith drop goal proving vital as the final hooter sounded. The Warriors boasted a 12-0 half time lead at the DW Stadium, but Hull came back to score 12 of their own in the second half.
Whiston-born scrum-half Smith scored Wigan’s only point of the second half, giving them a 13-12 win — their second victory of the season.
Another Rangi Chase inspired performance gave Salford a 24-18 win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on Sunday. The club will hope that the guaranteed entertainment Chase provides in each game will help improve on their Mothers’ Day attendance of just 2,712.
Elsewhere, Hull KR claimed their second win of the season, with a 50-20 home victory against Catalans Dragons. After being 20 points to 6 behind at one point in the first half, Rovers scored 46 unanswered and were helped on their way by a hat-trick of tries from former Parramatta Eels winger Ken Sio.
