Opposition leader faces assassination plot charge

Machado in court

VENEZUELA'S far-right opposition leader Corina Machado arrived in court today to face charges of plotting to assassinate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The accusation was made after government intelligence services intercepted a message reportedly sent from Mr Machado's email account which read: "I believe the time has come to join forces, make the necessary calls, and obtain the financing to annihilate Maduro ... and the rest will come falling down."

Ms Machado told reporters the accusations and evidence were false.

The charge carries a maximum of 16 years in prison.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf accused Venezuela of "arbitrary use of prosecutorial power to silence and punish government critics."
