McLaren to name Alonso’s partner for 2015

McLaren will finally announce their driver line-up for next year’s Formula One season tomorrow.

Fernando Alonso has already been named as one of the drivers who will race for McLaren, seven years after he left.

Group chief executive Ron Dennis had stated after the Italian grand prix in September that a final decision would be made before the final race of the year — Abu Dhabi in November.

Dennis has been criticised for the time it has taken to name the second driver by Mika Hakkinen, a double world champion with McLaren, who said: “What is happening at McLaren is unworthy of such a team.”

British Racing Drivers Club president Derek Warwick claimed that McLaren’s treatment of Jenson Button has been “disgusting,” with Dennis taking an age to decide whether to go with Button or youngster Kevin Magnussen.

Button said last week: “I just want to get it done. I want to hear the decision as we all do so we can all move on in whatever direction.”

Should Magnussen be chosen ahead of the former world champion, Button is lined up to enter the World Endurance Championship with Toyota.

He said: “I’m now really comfortable and whatever happens I will have a great year next year.

“New challenges are exciting, whether it’s in Formula One with McLaren alongside an exciting teammate, or whether it’s elsewhere.”
