Wales: Courts could close after £2m refurb

MINISTERS want to close two courts in Wales — a year after spending almost £2 million of taxpayers’ cash on refurbishing them.

Plaid Cymru MP Jonathan Edwards unearthed the damning statistics yesterday and is raising a parliamentary question on what he called “a colossal waste of public money.”

Mr Edwards obtained figures showing that, between 2009 and 2014, the government spent £1,359,513 on Carmarthen Law Courts and £363,486 on Carmarthen Civil, Family, Tribunal and Probate Hearing Centre.

But the Justice Ministry plans to close 11 courts in Wales, including the two which have been refurbished.

Mr Edwards said: “The information I have exposed today shows how the UK government’s proposals are completely incredible and make a mockery of its rhetoric of being fiscally competent.

“It would be a colossal waste of public money to close down buildings that have just had the best part of £2m spent on them.”
