Wirral posties to walk out after colleagues sacked for taking tea break

ROYAL Mail workers on the Wirral have voted to strike in solidarity with their colleagues who were sacked for taking a tea break to which they were legally entitled.

Postal union CWU announced on Tuesday that 70.6 per cent of their members at Prenton delivery office have voted to down tools over the dismissals, which they described as “petty.”

In August, local Royal Mail management dismissed workers for taking a tea break at the Caernarfon Castle, a local gastropub.

Eleven employees were initially suspended for taking the break. The disciplinary action caused a major disruption to postal services across the Wirral.

In a further escalation, earlier this month, local management ruled that four of the workers would not be returning to work.

Among the individuals was a dedicated worker with an impeccable 44-year tenure at the institution.

According to the CWU, the decision was met with anger by the 30-strong workforce, further eroding morale as they grapple with chronic understaffing and management cuts.

A CWU spokesperson said: “The result is a clear demonstration of the anger workers feel about this petty, vindictive attack on their respected colleagues.

“It is a clear rejection of a culture of bullying and mismanagement in the workplace.

“This situation won’t be solved by management doubling down on poorly handled decisions, but with a decent compromise that sees these workers reinstated and the workforce treated with the respect they deserve.”
