Vietnamese president awarded Jose Marti Order as three-day visit to Cuba concludes

VIETNAMESE President Nguyen Xuan Phuc was awarded the Order of Jose Marti today as he completed an official visit to Cuba aimed at boosting bilateral ties.

The award, named after the revolutionary Cuban poet, is the socialist island’s highest honour, bestowed on those who contribute to peace and humanity.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel praised Mr Phuc for his contributions in “accelerating solidarity, friendship and co-operation between the two parties, states and people.”

He thanked Vietnam for its continued support to the Cuban revolutionary cause in the past and present. This was reciprocated by Mr Phuc, who said that late Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s statement that, for Vietnam, “Cuba is willing to shed its blood” was evidence of the strong bond between the countries.

The two leaders discussed trade, defence and joint efforts to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, including the sharing of equipment and technology.

A memorandum of understanding was signed covering health, agriculture and cybersecurity, while Vietnam agreed the purchase of 10 million doses of Cuba’s Covid-19 vaccine.
