A HUGE rally of 200,000 health workers and supporters took place in Madrid today against health privatisation and for recruiting more staff.
The protest in the Spanish capital was dubbed the “white tidal wave” because of the white medical coats worn by many of the participants.
Walkouts in the health sector have been staged since last Monday, with a full strike by the city’s 5,000 doctors planned for November 21.
The protests target the policies of Madrid’s municipal government led by the right-wing Popular Party, rather than the Spanish left-led coalition. Unions accuse the Madrid authorities of dismantling the public health system in favour of private providers.
Organisers said that though Madrid is the Spanish region with the highest income per capita it is also the one that spends the least per capita on primary healthcare — and that half of everything spent goes to the private sector.
“The people of Madrid do not deserve delays of more than a week to see family doctors,” the AMYTS doctors' union said.
