SSP gives up on SNP electoral alliance

The SNP was on a general election collision course with former referendum ally the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) yesterday after the left-wing group revealed it will field candidates.

SSP leader Colin Fox said the party was left “no alternative” after the SNP and Greens rejected proposals for a Yes Alliance and said his party would now put its own “distinctive anti-austerity, socialist policies before voters.”

The SSP executive met in Glasgow at the weekend and agreed to proceed to select its candidates for seats “across urban Scotland” in May’s general election.

“The centrepiece of our campaign will be a £10 per hour living wage and an end to zero-hour contracts,” Mr Fox said.
