Sport in brief: March 23, 2025

CYCLING: Mathieu Van der Poel held off Filippo Ganna and world champion Tadej Pogacar in a sprint finish to win Saturday’s Milan-San Remo one-day race. 

Fred Wright was the highest-placed Briton in tenth, 43 seconds behind Van der Poel. 

Lorena Wiebes pipped Marianne Vos on the line to win the women’s race, with Noemi Ruegg third. Britain’s Pfeiffer Georgi finished 16th, two places ahead of compatriot Cat Ferguson.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Adam Wilson bagged a hat-trick as newly crowned Cymru Premier champions The New Saints stormed to a 6-0 win at Cardiff Met to preserve their 14-point lead over second-placed Penybont, who won 2-1 in Haverfordwest. 

At the other end of the table, Aberystwyth’s 33-year run in the top tier of Welsh football came to an end after they lost 1-0 at home to Briton Ferry Llansawel.  

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Table-topping Leinster’s 12-match United Rugby Championship unbeaten run was ended by a last-minute 21-20 defeat in Pretoria on Saturday. 

Second-placed Glasgow are now nine points behind the Irishmen after a 28-25 win over Munster. 

Ulster came from behind to win 34-30 at bottom club Newport Dragons, Edinburgh lost 21-18 at Treviso, Ospreys edged Connacht 43-40, Cardiff beat the Lions 20-17, Cape Town won 29-17 at Scarlets and Durban held off Zebre 35-34.

SPEEDWAY: The new domestic speedway season gets under way this evening with three first-leg Knockout Cup meetings. 

Reigning Premiership champions Belle Vue host last year’s cup runners-up Ipswich in Manchester, King’s Lynn take on Oxford and Leicester include Drew Kemp in their squad for the trip to Birmingham. 

All three second legs are scheduled to take place on Thursday. Cup-holders Sheffield have received a bye to the semi-finals.
