Two senior Republicans accused US President Barack Obama on Saturday of breaking the law by approving the release of five Afghan detainees held at Guantanamo Bay.
The White House, which had negotiated the release of captive US Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, agreed that the releases were made in spite of legal requirements, citing "unique and exigent circumstances."
Sgt Bergdahl was handed over to US special forces by the Taliban.
In return, five Afghans held at the US camp on Cuba were released to the custody of the government of Qatar, which served as a go-between in negotiations for the exchange.
