RMT seafarers at Foreland Shipping, which provides strategic sealift services to the Ministry of Defence, overwhelmingly rejected the company’s pay offer in a recent referendum.
Some 85 per cent of members voted against the offer, the union says.
RMT has written to Foreland calling for an urgent meeting with management to resolve the matter and avoid taking steps towards potential strike action.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “This overwhelming rejection shows just how out of touch Foreland Shipping’s offer is with the needs and expectations of our members.
“These seafarers are highly skilled, providing a vital service in support of the Ministry of Defence’s maritime operations.
“They deserve a pay rise that reflects their role and are prepared to robustly fight for what they believe is fair.
“We are ready to negotiate, but if the company refuses to move, we will not hesitate to escalate this dispute.”
Foreland Shipping has been contacted for comment.
