Men’s golf: Chief executive Keith Pelley has delivered an impassioned defence of the PGA European Tour in the face of what he termed the “LIV propaganda machine”.
Eighteen players who have featured in the Saudi-backed breakaway’s events – to varying degrees – are in the field for the PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Speaking to the media today, Pelley urged the likes of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia not to show disrespect to the PGA European Tour by “parroting LIV’s talking points” and dismissed Garcia’s claim that the circuit is a feeder tour set to become the fifth best in the world.
Men’s tennis: Nick Kyrgios’s quest for a first grand slam title at the US Open ended with a five-set quarter-final defeat by Russia’s Karen Khachanov.
After reaching the Wimbledon final, Kyrgios arrived in New York motivated to try to go one better, but he was unable to find the same tremendous level.
Instead it is Russian Khachanov who progresses to a first slam semi-final after clinching a 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7 (3) 6-4 victory just before 1am this morning.
Having congratulated Khachanov, Kyrgios showed his frustration with the result by destroying two rackets and then walking swiftly off court.
Men’s football: Pep Guardiola claimed Erling Haaland was born to score goals after the Norwegian bagged another couple in Manchester City’s winning Champions League start.
Haaland took his City tally to 12 in just eight appearances with a double that helped the Premier League winners to a 4-0 victory over Sevilla in their Group G opener in Spain on Tuesday.
City manager Guardiola said: “It is a born instinct he has carried from the cradle and he has shown in Austria, in Germany and now with us. It is a unique reality of this player. It is a natural instinct to score goals.”
