GREAT BRITAIN’S women rugby sevens team claimed gold at the European Games in Poland to secure their place at the Paris Olympics next summer.
After beating Belgium 36-12 in the semi-finals, the British squad swept past hosts Poland 33-0 at the Henryk Reyman’s Municipal Stadium in Krakow.
“I’m so happy that our journey worked out, it’s a huge sense of relief that everything went to plan,” said co-captain Meg Jones.
“We’ve been pushing the boundaries all year and we definitely pushed them there. I’m so buzzing for the girls — to have this experience and go out there and achieve what we just did is just a stepping stone in the right direction.
“Paris qualification is exactly what we came for and we’re leaving with it.”
The men’s squad saw off Spain 19-7 to reach the final, but had to settle for silver after they lost 26-12 against Ireland and will now go into an international repechage tournament to try to earn their place in next summer’s Olympic Games.
Elsewhere in the multi-sport event, there was further success for Britain in the diving where 18-year-old Robbie Lee took home a silver in the 10 metres platform.
