Just Stop Oil brings London traffic to a halt

JUST Stop Oil protesters blocked a major road in central London on Friday, bringing traffic to a standstill for an hour.

The Metropolitan Police said it had made 16 arrests after climate activists walked onto a major junction in Holborn, and glued themselves to the tarmac at around 10.30am on Friday.

The force said the road was reopened later that morning.

The action follows two weeks of consecutive days of civil disobedience by Just Stop Oil supporters aimed at demanding the government to halt all new fossil fuel projects.

One of the protesters, Patrick Walker, 33, a council worker from Newport said: “Up until very recently I really thought the government would eventually take action to save us from the worst of the climate crisis.

“Then the [International Panel on Climate Change] warned us last year that we had to stop new fossil fuel extraction if we wanted a liveable future, only for governments to completely ignore them.

“I realised then the government wouldn’t listen and I had to take action if I wanted a future for my family. I have no choice but to resist.”
