Communists call for solidarity protests over arrested teacher

Swaziland regime of King Mswati III seizes man accused of trade union activity

SWAZILAND communists urged the international community today to protest at the arrest of teacher Maxwell Myeni for union activities in the Swaziland National Association of Teachers.

Mr Myeni was arrested on Sunday evening at his home in Lavumisa by six heavily armed officers of the notorious Lukhozi police unit.

The Royal Lukhozi is the brutal force of King Mswati III’s regime, “known for its torture of prisoners who often end up dead,” the Communist Party of Swaziland said.

“Their greater focus is often on human rights activists, unionists, youth and student activists and members of political parties.

“As such, we are fully aware of the torture that Comrade Maxwell has endured whilst in arbitrary police detention the whole of last night,” it added.

“We also call upon the international community to voice their solidarity towards the innocent worker, arrested for participating in a trade union movement.”
