State school cuts will be ‘worse than expected’

CUTS to state school budgets are going to be worse than expected,  union analysis of government figures found yesterday.

The joint research by five education unions revealed that almost 18,000 schools, amounting to 90 per cent of schools in the state sector, face receiving less cash per pupil — 500 more schools than originally feared.

The unions which analysed the data all have members working in education. They are teachers’ union NEU, head teachers’ union NAHT and general unions Unite, Unison and GMB.

They say that 17,942 schools will suffer more cuts under government austerity plans.

They said in a statement: “The school funding crisis is real. Time is running out to make a difference to school budgets this year.

“Only a fully-funded education system will deliver the equality of opportunity that school staff, parents, governors, school leaders and politicians are all so passionate about.”

The unions run a joint website monitoring details of the government’s continuing attack on state education, which can be found at schoolcuts.org.uk
