Cubans commemorate the Day of the Martyrs of the Revolution

THE people of Cuba celebrated the Day of the Martyrs of the Revolution on Sunday.

The day marks the anniversary of the assassination of underground organiser Frank Pais, the 26 of July Movement’s chief of action and sabotage, in 1957, and honours all the revolutionaries who died in the fight to overthrow the dictator Fulgencio Batista and secure the national sovereignty of the Caribbean island.

On Twitter, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel shared the words of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro: “We have to come here every year to remember the dead of the revolution; but it has to be like an examination of conscience and the conduct of each one of us.”

Parliamentary president Esteban Lazo said: “To [Pais and other martyrs of the country]: honour and glory, and our commitment to defend the revolution every day with the same impetus and firmness.”
