Schools in Wales to remain closed in June

SCHOOLS in Wales will remain closed in June due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, the Welsh government confirmed yesterday.

Education Minister Kirsty Williams said — amid speculation that some schools in England could be reopened soon — that the “situation for schools in Wales will not change on June 1.”

“Any decision to increase the operation of schools will be communicated well in advance. We are working closely with local authorities to ensure that schools are supported in this preparation work,” she said.

“In the meantime, critical workers and those who need to use schools or hubs for your children should continue do so.”

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price warned that a relaxation of restrictions across England could be “potentially disastrous” for Wales as it risks undermining the approach of the latter.

He welcomed First Minister Mark Drakeford’s plans to extend the Welsh lockdown for another three weeks.

It will be modified by the lifting of the once-daily exercise cap, re-opening of garden centres and allowing councils to plan for the re-opening of libraries and recycling centres.
