Labour Party Conference ’19 Royal shambles boosts republican case

THE constitutional crisis caused by Boris Johnson and Elizabeth Windsor’s illegal proroguing of Parliament is strengthening Labour For A Republic’s cause, the campaign group’s Theo Morgan said.

“A hereditary monarchy is incompatible with Labour’s socialist values,” Mr Morgan told the group’s fringe meeting on Tuesday night, ironically held in the Regency Suite at the Old Ship Hotel on Brighton seafront.

“The Queen is meant to be impartial and above politics, yet [she] has enabled Johnson to break the law as the Supreme Court ruled this morning.”

Alexandra Runswick from Unlock Democracy said that closing Parliament was “an attempt by an arrogant and entitled Prime Minister who has never had to face the public vote to force his extreme policy agenda on the country.”

She said: “This was never about Brexit, it was about power …  and one of the main reasons this attempt got as far as it did was because he could rely on the prerogative powers left over by an absolute monarch.”
