RMT slams staff layoffs as Tube tests terror reaction

A DISUSED Tube station provided the scene for a practice terror attack yesterday, while rail union RMT condemned bosses for sacking station staff who were vital in emergencies.

The exercise, said to have been planned for months, had emergency services responding to reports of gunmen opening fire before disappearing into the Underground.

It took place five days after 30 British holidaymakers were shot dead by a terrorist on a beach in Tunisia, and a week before the 10th anniversary of the July 7 attacks in the capital.

Paramedics and fire officers could be seen carrying casualties, played by actors, on stretchers out of the station in Aldwych, central London, as the temperature hit 30°C.

RMT has accused Underground bosses of “dangerous complacency,” warning that they “make no connection” between incident response times and station staff numbers.

Leader Mick Cash said: “It is frankly appalling that those same station and platform staff who were hailed as heroes on that horrific day are having their numbers slashed.”
