Animal rights activists blockade McDonald’s burger factory

ANIMAL rights activists have blockaded McDonald’s only burger factory in Britain to protest against the fast-food giant’s “track record of destroying the environment.”

Around 50 members of Animal Rebellion set up bamboo structures and tents to block the entrance of OSI Food Solutions in Scunthorpe in the early hours of this morning.

The group said the factory produces three million burgers a day and that they will continue the blockade until McDonald’s pledges to work towards a plant-based menu.

Animal Rebellion spokeswoman Rose Patterson said: “The meat and dairy industries are responsible for 80-90 per cent of Amazon deforestation, at least 18 per cent of global emissions — and for exploiting and killing billions of animals every year.

“To save ourselves and the future of our children, we must start transitioning towards a plant-based food system.”

A 2018 study into the environmental impacts of food production found that a plant-based food system could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49 per cent.
