Israeli arms factory to be targeted for protest

A PROTEST in solidarity with activists who closed down an Israeli arms factory for three days in September will take place in Oldham on Friday.

Oldham Peace and Justice will hold the rally outside Ferranti Technologies factory, one of the 10 sites across Britain owned by Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest private arms company.

The protest will coincide with the plea hearing of three of the activists who shut down UAV Engines, also owned by Elbit, in Shenstone, Staffordshire.

During the three-day occupation in September, three activists locked themselves to the gates and five climbed onto the roof.

The solidarity protest comes after Oldham Peace and Justice wrote to the local council objecting to the presence of an Elbit-owned factory in the area.

Activists say that the factory produces parts for weapons used by the Israeli army.

Elbit Systems supplies over 80 per cent of the Israeli military’s drone fleet.

Its Hermes 900 and 450 models were used during the bombardment of Gaza in 2014.

Protesters will gather outside the Ferranti Technologies factory from 12pm on Friday.
