Isle of Man ferry company faces strike ballot over changes to terms and working conditions

THE Isle of Man’s state-run ferry firm is facing a strike ballot over detrimental changes to terms and working conditions, Nautilus International warned today.

The union accused the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company of attempting to impose “living aboard arrangements that would have a significant detriment to the family life and well-being of critical workers.”

Bosses on the island, which is a self-governing British Crown Dependency, have “failed to listen and act on the concerns of employees,” it stressed.

Nautilus senior national organiser Garry Elliot said: “We have given the company several opportunities to engage with us in good faith to avoid escalation, but they have failed to do so.

“The company has acted with stunning disregard for the concerns of their employees.

“Unfortunately, it will be the workers and the islanders who rely on this service who will face the consequences of management’s obstinance.”

In a statement, the 193-year-old firm told Manx Radio that it “respects ongoing negotiations with the union,” adding: “We will not be commenting further at this time.”
