First Ings goal not enough for win

Liverpool 1-1 Norwich

A FIRST Liverpool goal for substitute Danny Ings wasn’t enough to see them to victory against Norwich in another disappointing performance at Anfield, writes James Nalton.

Long-term absentee Daniel Sturridge returned to the starting 11, adding a touch of quality to Liverpool’s attack from the outset, working well with his teammates and creating early openings for both Christian Benteke and James Milner.

Norwich could only manage a couple of wild efforts in the first half while Liverpool made plenty.

Ings came on at half-time and opened his Anfield tally within five minutes. A stray pass from Russell Martin landed at the feet of Alberto Moreno, who quickly played the striker in behind the Norwich defence.

The Reds were spurred on and Norwich looked out of the game, but a Simon Mignolet error from a corner handed the visitors an equaliser.

He came through the crowd in an attempt to deal with the cross, but his punch merely presented Norwich captain Martin with a chance to atone for his earlier error, which he duly took.

The game began to open up, and Norwich almost took the lead, but Mignolet denied Matt Jarvis after good work from Nathan Redmond down the right.

Substitute Adam Lallana fizzed an effort just wide of the post in injury time, but neither side could find the winner.

Norwich remain ahead of Liverpool on goal difference in the bottom half of the table.
