MATT HANCOCK insisted yesterday that the government’s “track and trace” programme is “up and running” and “successful,” despite reports of multiple technical problems.
The Health Secretary claimed that people being phoned up by contact tracers were “responding positively” when asked to self-isolate.
When asked why contact tracers had reported having “little to do” by journalists during yesterday’s Downing Street press briefing, Mr Hancock claimed that the system was currently running at “over-capacity.”
“We have more capacity than we need, this is a good thing.”
Last week NHS workers in the scheme reported technical issues when attempting to log onto the website while others said they had not been assigned a single case.
Mr Hancock revealed new testing numbers claiming the government has the capacity now to carry out 206,444 tests per day. He stressed that anyone showing Covid-19 symptoms should get a test.
The number of confirmed cases now stands at 1,570, the lowest its been since March 25.
