COUNCIL workers in Glasgow will gather outside an under-threat cleansing depot on Saturday to protest against its proposed closure.
Around 60 staff are set to be moved miles away to Queenslie as the local authority plans to shut down the Baltic Street depot in the city’s east end.
Workers will have to pay up to £60 more per month on travel costs, and there are concerns local people will see cleaning services worsen.
The council has said it is simply consolidating services, but trade unions will gather tomorrow afternoon at the depot to plead for the site to remain open.
A GMB Scotland spokesperson said: "Glasgow has a waste crisis and the council's response is to cut the service trying to tackle it. It's ridiculous.
"You cannot cut your way out of crisis, and closing this depot is only going to make the problem worse.”
The cleansing workers have warned that Queenslie, which is already in poor repair, would be unworkable with more than 60 extra people scrammed in.
Glasgow City Council did not respond to the Star’s request for comment.
