It’s truly pantomime season given the theatrics in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Huddersfield yesterday afternoon.
There was the villain of the piece, played by referee Paul Tierney, Lucas Torreira cast in the role of hero for the Gunners with his winner in the 83rd minute and enough players falling over from both sides to keep those in attendance booing and hissing throughout.
Instead of your usual “oh yes he did/no he didn’t” chant, Arsenal supporters opted for the infamous “the referee’s a wanker” rendition which will be heard in football stadiums up and down the country this festive season.
One performance which cannot be ignored was of the Huddersfield players, who were portraying the big bad bullies to Arsenal’s brave conquerors.
According to their manager David Wagner, they played their role perfectly.
“Obviously we wanted to make it uncomfortable for them for them but to be totally honest, from my point of view, there were a few yellow cards on both sides which [made me think]: ‘I’m back in Germany.’
“Usually in England, you don’t concede such quick yellow cards for tackles like this.”
Wagner was pleased that the watching media noticed Tierney’s performance in the middle of the park.
“I’m happy that you said it because I didn’t want to speak about the referee again today and penalty appeals. This is why I don’t like to give any comments on this
As for the home side’s performance, manager Unai Emery once again got the script spot on.
No lead at half-time, make some changes during the break and net a winner in the second half to send paying viewers home happy.
It has been acted out plenty of times over the last few months by this Gunners side and yet supporters are not yet tired of seeing it.
